Air Service Agreement Has Big Incentives

There are some pretty big perks in the City of Columbia’s new agreement with American Airlines. The carrier is scheduled to start service from Columbia Regional Airport to Dallas and Chicago as soon as mid-February.

At a special meeting Friday, the City Council got to see more details of the plan. In addition to giving American Airlines a $3 million guarantee against lackluster revenue, the city will waive up to $250,000 in airport fees for the new carrier over the next two years. Columbia also has to give American $400,000 in advertising during that same span.

Either party can end the proposed agreement with three months’ notice. The council didn’t take any action on Friday other than reviewing the plan.
