Beloved Local Columnist Dies

Irene Haskins

A longtime Columbia Tribune writer known for her “Smile Awhile” column died Thursday night.

Irene Haskins was 84. The Tribune says she died at Boone Hospital with family at her side, as a result of a brain hemorrhage caused by a fall at her home. Haskins started writing her popular column in October of 1977, which means it would have marked its 35th anniversary next month.

Tribune editor Jim Robertson says funeral arrangements for Irene Haskins are pending at Memorial Funeral Home.
