Will a bill designed to boost business in Missouri also deal a big blow to schools?

On “The Eagle Eye Drive at Five,” Brent Ghan with the Missouri School Boards’ Association says a bill that’s designed to cut corporate income taxes in half and reduce individual income tax isn’t good policy. He says Missouri is already underfunding its own formula for supporting public schools, and worries about what a decrease in revenue would mean for education.

“It would blow a hole in the state budget of somewhere around $800 million, which is equivalent to all the state funding for higher education,” Ghan says. “It’s a huge amount.”

Governor Nixon has said he will probably veto the tax cut. Republicans in the General Assembly think they have the votes to override him in September.

A proposed one-cent sales tax for transportation stalls out on the final day of the legislative session.

The sales tax proposal was projected to generate nearly $8 billion over a decade for Missouri highways, local roads, and other mass transportation. The House approved the plan Tuesday, but Republicans were divided over whether to ask voters for a tax increase.

Senators never got to vote on the final version of the bill, though they supported a similar proposal earlier in the session. Cities and counties would each get five percent of the revenues, with the rest going to state projects. Voters would still have to approve the tax in a general election for it to take effect.

Senator Mike Kehoe of Jefferson City sponsored the bill. He said he is disappointed, and added Missouri’s transportation needs will not change.

Columbia Police are looking into reports of a stabbing at Douglass Park.

They got a call Friday afternoon saying someone was stabbed. When officers arrived in under two minutes, they found nothing… no witnesses, evidence, or signs of an assault.

About 20 minutes later, police responded to University Hospital, after learning a 60-year-old woman with stab wounds arrived at the emergency room. The woman had non life-threatening injuries to her hand and neck, and said she got them when a female acquaintance assaulted her.

Police didn’t connect that victim to the Douglass Park report, and say they’re still investigating.

Three people go by ambulance to the hospital, after a car accident on Columbia’s Business Loop.

The three-vehicle wreck happened at about 9:00 a.m. Friday at the entrance to Burger King. Fire Captain John Metz says it required the Jaws of Life to get one of the female victims out of her car, which took about twenty minutes.

“We had to cut away both passenger doors on the right side of the vehicle, and what we call the ‘B’ post, the post separating those two doors, in order to gain access to the patient, provide medical care, and then remove her from the vehicle,” Metz says.

It appears the injuries for all the people involved were not life-threatening.

“All three were transported as non-trauma alerts to the University Hospital,” Metz says.

The accident forced emergency crews to close both lanes of eastbound Business Loop 70 between Garth and Providence for about an hour Friday morning.

He brought a sword to a gunfight, and now he’s in jail.

Authorities say 51-year-old David Salmons of Fulton got into an argument with three adult relatives near a Callaway County home a little after 11:00 p.m. Thursday. He then poked some holes in the side of the home with his blade. He didn’t hurt anyone, because one of the relatives kept him at bay with a gun.

Salmons threw the sword in his truck and drove off, then tried to get away when deputies spotted him. He was arrested after a short chase, and taken into custody. He faces several charges, including burglary, domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and property damage.

***UPDATE 10:15 a.m. Friday***

The search continues today for the fourth suspect connected to a Boone County shooting and car chase last month.

Sheldon Grayson was one of four people that ran from a car containing stolen goods on Roby Farm Road on April 30th. Marland Lane and Jamil Edwards were arrested soon after they fled. Boone County Sheriff’s Detective Tom O’Sullivan says Autumn Kee was just arrested in Texarkana, Texas, in relation to an alleged coin theft…

“I don’t know if we have any charges against her at this time,” O’Sullivan says. “She was a passenger in the vehicle. That matter is still under investigation.”

Authorities believe Kee and Grayson were traveling together, and they consider Grayson armed and dangerous. They both already had outstanding warrants even before the Roby Farm Road incident.

***ORIGINAL STORY***

Police in Texas say they’ve arrested a woman connected to a Boone County shooting and car chase.

KMIZ reports authorities in Texarkana, Texas arrested 26-year-old Autumn Kee after a week-long investigation into coin theft. Kee is one of four suspects in a Boone County shots fired incident that turned into a pursuit on April 30th.

Deputies arrested 22-year-old Marland Lane and 21-year-old Jamil Edwards as they fled after crashing their car near Roby Farm Road, but Kee and 21-year-old Sheldon Grayson got away. Texarkana Police think Grayson is also in their area, and they consider him armed and dangerous.

(AP) Missouri lawmakers want county sheriffs rather than the state Revenue Department to print concealed weapons permits.

Sheriffs already make sure that applicants meet all the criteria for carrying a concealed firearm. But the Revenue Department is responsible for printing concealed-carry endorsements on people’s drivers’ or non-drivers’ ID card.

Republican lawmakers pushed for the legislation after learning the Revenue Department shared a list of Missouri gun permit holders with a federal agent, possibly against state law.

The legislation would also require school personnel to undergo training on responding to an active shooter in school buildings. The Senate sent the measure to Governor Jay Nixon Thursday.

(AP) – Missouri prosecutors want a judge to let them keep closer tabs on the former head of a failed artificial sweetener plant in Moberly.

Attorney General Chris Koster’s office said Thursday it has filed a motion in St. Charles County Circuit Court seeking to monitor ex-Mamtek CEO Bruce Cole with a wearable GPS device.

Cole is under house arrest in his home state of California awaiting a Missouri trial on felony fraud and forgery charges. His bond was reduced from $500,000 to $100,000 in March.

The Mamtek project was financed with $39 million in bonds issued by the city of Moberly’s Industrial Development Authority. The project collapsed after Cole’s company missed a bond payment in August 2011.

A hearing is scheduled Monday on a change of venue from Randolph County.
