The Money Pit is a nationally syndicated, call-in radio show that helps listeners with their home repair and improvement problems. The show has consistently been named among “America’s 100 Most Important Radio Shows” by Talkers magazine. It’s been on the air for over ten years, and is now carried carried on over 210 radio affiliates including WABC 770 in New York City and is also heard across the nation on XM satellite radio. Each week, Tom and Leslie take dozens of calls from listeners who ask about everything from pest problems to deck dilemmas. Their combined experience and expertise allow them to offer solutions to a wide range of problems immediately. If they aren’t sure how to help, which is rare, they can always point callers in the right direction. Also, just by getting on the air, you are automatically entered into a random prize drawing each week. In the past, we’ve given away amazing famous brand name prizes like a Craftsman Jig Saw worth $80 and an Oreck vacuum worth $500.

Gardening, horticulture, call it what you like! From roses to vegetables, from African Violets to flowering shrubs, Ralph Snodsmith’s Garden Hotline® has all the answers the gardener is looking for. He shares his half-century of gardening, horticulture and broadcasting experience.

Ralph Snodsmith first began to learn the difference between “roots and shoots” at the University of Illinois where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture. In 1965 he started as Agricultural Extension Agent in Rockland County, NY, and in 1970 assumed the position of Executive Director of the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, NY.

Mr. Snodsmith has lectured at the New York Botanical Garden since 1968. In 1985, for his accomplishments in horticultural education, he was awarded both The New York Botanical Garden Distinguished Service Award and The New York Botanical Garden Distinguished Educator in Plant Studies Award. In 1998 a very rare evergreen, called Picea brewerana (or Brewer’s spruce) was planted in his honor.

As the popular host of The Garden Hotline®, Ralph has been heard on WRKL, WLIR, WRCR, WOR Radio Network, and ABC Talkradio Weekend. In his eight years of appearances on Good Morning America as gardening editor, Ralph Snodsmith educated millions of Americans about plants and their proper care. In 1982, for his contributions to broadcast journalism in the field of horticulture, he was honored with the Willard H. Allen Agricultural Communications Award by the New Jersey Agricultural Society. In 1992, Ralph was presented with the American Horticultural Society Communications Award.

Since 1984, Mr. Snodsmith has written the gardening section for Americana Encyclopedia Yearbook. He is a member of Garden Writers of America and over the years has contributed to many publications. In 1995, he received the Ram’s Horn Award from the State University of New York at Farmingdale.

In 1993, he distilled his 25 years of experience teaching at the New York Botanical Garden into an eminently comprehensive and usable guide for gardeners of every level, Ralph Snodsmith’s Fundamentals of Gardening. He also authored Tips From the Garden Hotline, and hundreds of fact sheets and newsletter articles. The Tri-State Gardener’s Guide was released in 2002. His latest book, New York Gardener’s Guide, was released January 2004.

Ralph lives with his wife Mary in Stafford County, Virginia, where he puts his horticultural expertise to practical use. He is also one “plant doctor” who still makes house calls.

James Carey and Morris Carey, known as the Carey Bros., are nationally-recognized experts on home building and renovation. They share their 55+ years of experience as award-winning, licensed contractors with millions of people nationwide through a weekly radio program and syndicated newspaper column both titled On The House.

With wit, enthusiasm and clarity, the Carey Bros.’ Associated Press syndicated newspaper column, four-hour radio broadcast and daily radio vignette offer people money-saving tips on building, remodeling and repairing homes. The column, with accompanying graphic, is distributed weekly to over 700 AP member papers including The San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Cleveland Plain-Dealer, San Diego Union-Tribune, Detroit Free Press, Washington Post and New Orleans Times-Picayune.

These third-generation contractors hold 20-year broadcast careers in radio and television. They deliver user-friendly, hands-on advice in their radio program and daily radio tip which are carried
James and Morris
James Carey (left) & Morris Carey (right)
coast-to-coast weekly via satellite to a rapidly growing network of more than 300 stations. The program is also broadcasted via live remote from home and building expos nationwide.

Recognized for their efforts in answering immediate and constant structural concerns by the public in the hours and days following the devastating October 1989 earthquake, the Carey Bros. and KCBS AM740 in San Francisco received the George Foster Peabody Award, broadcasting’s most prestigious honor, for their outstanding contributions towards “comprehensive, intelligent and useful coverage.”

Beyond radio and print, the Careys have a rich and colorful history on television. Clad in their signature bright bib overalls, they have appeared as the home improvement editors on CBS News Saturday Morning; as home improvement family members on the popular Family Channel’s Home and Family program; and have appeared as guests on various national and local television programs.

Besides their syndicated column, the Carey Bros. have authored four “how-to” books, Cost-Effective Home Upgrades published by Ortho Books (1992); Home Remodeling For Dummies published by IDG Books Worldwide (1998); Home Maintenance For Dummies also published by IDG Books Worldwide (2000), and Home Improvement-All-In-One For Dummies published by Wiley Publishing, Inc. (2004). The Carey Bros. also write a regular monthly column for The Family Handyman, a Reader’s Digest home improvement magazine.

The Careys also host a highly-trafficked and information-packed website, onthehouse.com, which acts as a convergence of all of their home improvement advice, tips and information.

Until recently, Morris and James owned and operated a successful home remodeling and construction firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Morris’ son, the fourth generation in the business, now heads up the business, which allows the brothers to focus on their home improvement endeavors. In addition to their broadcast achievements, Morris and James have been named to Remodeling magazine’s Hall of Fame “Big 50″ which recognizes top achievers in the industry and have been honored as one of the nation’s top 500 companies by Qualified Remodeler magazine.

The brothers were the Founding Fathers of the first California chapter of the National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI), with James serving as the chapter’s first president.
