Amanda McDaniel is an 18 year old senior at Christian Fellowship School who has been battling a form of bone cancer, osteosarcoma, for the last four years. She has endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy and had her left leg amputated a year and a half ago. Throughout her treatments, Amanda has been an inspiration and …joy to everyone around her. She never complains, always believes for the best, and is determined to live every moment to the fullest. Although much of Amanda’s treatment has required her to travel to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX, Amanda has remained active in her school, serving on the student council and on the cheerleading squad. When cheering the basketball team, she will at times drop her crutches to cheer on one leg. More recently she has been cheering from a wheelchair. Amanda received a prosthetic leg after her amputation, however, her continued weight loss has made it difficult for the leg to be properly fitted and function properly. Amanda recently received an “I Can” award from the Columbia Area Career Center for her exemplary attitude and work effort in her Floral and Plant Design class. Amanda’s father, Larry McDaniel, is the founder and director of Coyote Hills Children’s Home in Harrisburg, MO. When Amanda and her twin brother, Caleb, were three, their biological mother died from cancer. Larry remarried and Amanda has a large blended family who care for and love each other deeply. Her stepmother, Denise, serves as the loving caretaker for everyone. Although Amanda has received the best of medical care and has profound faith and a never-give-up spirit, her cancer continues to advance. This week, at Amanda’s request, the entire family of nine is off to Disney World in Orlando, FL. If anyone would be interested helping to fund this wonderful young lady’s wish and offset some of the numerous other costs associated with her care, please send checks to or contact: Friends of Amanda c/0 Christian Fellowship School 4600 Christian Fellowship Rd. Columbia, MO 65203 573-445-8565 principal@christianfellowship.com More information about Amanda and her journey can be found at www.cheersforamanda.blogspot.com.

The economy will recover, eventually. Jobs will return, eventually. TARP and other targeted spending will not make it happen. When congress reins in spending and cut corporate taxes the money will flow and the economy will heat up. Deep down inside I think Democrats know this but they can’t bring themselves to do anything about it. If they DO cut taxes and spending with a positive result they can’t rely on class war fare in the future. They’re stuck. Damned if they cut taxes (proves they’ve been wrong about “tax cuts for the rich”) and damned if they don’t (the economy will be stuck in this bog for years to come) effectively driving them from power. My guess is that Republicans will save the Democrats from themselves. I suspect Republicans will make huge gains in November and cut taxes again (hopefully they will cut spending too!) The economy will recover and save the Obama administration. Like Clinton before him, Obama will get the credit for the recovery and get re-elected. The Republicans will then be in much the same position as the Democrats. Damned if they do cut taxes (Dems get re-elected) damned if they don’t (We all suffer from a dead economy) and I’m anxious to see who gets damned!

This week, Tom Bradly and I had a contest to see who could get the most listeners to sign on as “fans” of our shows. We teased, bribed and begged listeners and it was great fun. One of the reasons Tom does so well (in all of his endevours)is his willingness to go for broke. He’s a fighter and does whatever it takes. You combine that with his natural talent and you have your hands full. Because I had more people sign on is not really proof that I beat him here. I had the edge. When he promoted the contest in the morning, I had all day to figure out a way to “one-up” him and I had the final show. If the contest had ended after Wake Up Columbia, it could just as easily have been Tom with more fans. So it was actually more of a tie game. Some lucky listeners will win some great prizes and hopefully you had as much fun as we did. So, thanks to you the listeners and thank you Tom for being such a great opponent. Tie game.

Last year my wife and I were having dinner at our favorite steak house, (CC’s City Broiler) when we were approached by and had the opportunity to meet, Bob Proctor. He and a few others were preparing to ship out of country. Because of my ads on the radio they chose to gather at CC’s for dinner. They asked me to MC their event as they said good bye to friends and family, and headed out for final training. It was an honor and I accepted. As I stood before these brave soldiers, they made me proud to be with them and more proud to be an American. Facing isolation from friends and family, facing the prospects of killing or being killed, they stood proud and you knew just looking at them that they were warriors. Whether you agree or disagree with their mission, they were called upon by their country and they answered the call. They are my heroes. From time to time I read about their exploits so that listeners don’t forget about them and the length of time they are separated from their families.
Skip ahead many months to “Veterans Day,” 2009. They called the show from Afghanistan and updated us on their situation. “What do you guys need over there” I asked. “Pillows” came their answers. “Pillows?” “Yes,” they explained that “when a soldier is wounded and shipped to Germany or the States, they take their pillow with them and now there is a shortage of pillows.” “I’ll send you some” I said. Then listeners called in: “We’d like to help too” was the response. “Operation pillow” started. Buy a pillow and drop it off at the station and we will get it to them. Please know that I’m proud of our listeners too. You’ve been bringing us pillows.

I know, you’re saying; But Gary, we created 30 thousand jobs.” Well, no we didn’t, the Associated Press reported;”The AP review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced.” They concluded we generated MAYBE 25,000. But lets do the math.. let’s see, we have 787 billion in to 25 thousand. I get about 31,480,000 dollars per job! Well, that’s stimulating, ain’t it?!

On a recent program I opined that we should not force doctors and hospitals to treat people who can not afford to pay for their services. I suggested that we send those people to charity hospitals. That would reduce the cost of health care and make it affordable to many more Americans. A caller asked about someone with no identification and hurt too badly to answer questions, what would we do with him? My first thought is always carry ID. That is the responsible thing to do. Send them to the charity hospital if no one can help with the identification. Some doctors and hospitals would treat them on their own. Forcing anybody to work without pay is slavery. But, the big question is; “what would work best for the most people?” Lowering the cost of health care for millions and sending some to charity hospitals or driving up the cost of health care so that millions can’t afford it and placing doctors in the position of slaves?

When I woke up Thursday morning I looked at the Associated Press headline on my cell phone. The headline announced that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. My first thought was that somehow, one of my friends had sent this to me as a joke. Then I realized that wasn’t possible. It was a REAL story. I instantly took stock of the Presidents accomplishments. What had I missed? He asked Israel to stop building Jewish settlements. They haven’t. I could go on but but suffice it to say he has accomplished nothing. Then I thought it might be just because he tried to accomplish “peace,” but that doesn’t wash either. You see, the nominations for this prize closed less than two weeks after he took the oath of office! Catholics beware: I’m sure the Pope will start Canonization for the first living person..Saint Obama is probably next!
