Columbia & Jefferson City Partner On Energy Usage

Governor Nixon will cut the ribbon and unveil the new renewable energy and waste heat utilization project in Jefferson City on Monday. Landfill gas from the Jefferson City landfill is captured and piped to the generation facility where it’s used to generate 3.2 megawatts of energy.  The renewable energy is then purchased by Columbia Water & Light to meet the city’s renewable energy ordinance.  This energy represents 2% of the Columbia electric portfolio and is equal to the amount of power used by 2-thousand homes. And Jefferson City gets something out of this partnership too.   The waste heat generated by the engines is then used to supply steam and hot water to the Jefferson City Correctional Center.
