The Columbia City Council says “no” once again to downtown cameras in The District but the council won’t be the final vote.Columbia voters will decide the issue on the April ballot. In a 5-2 vote Monday the city council turned down the request to put surveillance cameras downtown. The question came before them again thanks to “Keep Columbia Safe.” The campaign was started by Karen Taylor, whose son, Adam, was attacked in a downtown parking garage in June 2008. The attack was caught on tape and Columbia police were able to make arrests from that video.
Asking the council to reject the cameras was a member of the ACLU who said there’s no research indicating that cameras stop crime.
The Taylors submitted over 3-thousand signatures in their campaign to put the question before voters.
