(MissouriNet) – Missouri’s secretary of state wants some big ethics changes. Jason Kander’s plan would cap campaign contributions, ban lawmakers accepting gifts and institute a three-year period before legislators can become lobbyists.
“We have the worst ethics laws and campaign finance laws in the country. And we have overwhelming support of doing something like this from the people of Missouri. So the question to me is not how or when, it’s why hasn’t this already happened,” says Kander.
Missouri is currently the only state with no limits on campaign donations or lobbyist gifts, and no ban on lawmakers becoming lobbyists immediately after leaving office. The measure is probably won’t make it out of Missouri’s Republican-led Legislature.
