Guilty Verdict In Death of Columbia Toddler

A sequestered Platte County jury deliberates about 2 hours and returns with a guilty verdict for Keyonda Lumpkin, the Columbia woman on trial for second degree murder in the beating death of her 2 year old son.   Cortez Johnson died last year at the University Hospital from a blow to the head.  The 27 year old woman is found guilty of helping the boy’s father kill the child. 27 year old Horace Johnson goes on trial in December.  Testimony and photos this week have been so graphic that one juror had to be excused in tears.  Cortez had more than 200 burns, cuts and bruises on his tiny body when he was brought into the University Hospital.  Columbia Police say she admitted that she knew about the abuse and she told them she didn’t stop it because she was in fear of Johnson.
